If we want to honor God with the integrity of His Word which tells us to live His will and purpose for our lives, then yes, we are obligated to live up to everything God tells us in His Word as we learn it.
I have a relative that has gone to church her whole life and is considered a strong Christian woman by many. But, she won’t read the Bible.
Why? Because she understands the commitment to make God’s Word come alive in our lives and center upon His will. She told me that if she reads the Bible she will then be responsible to do what it says, but since she wants to live life her way, she avoids the Bible and what it says. Somehow, ignorance of God’s Word gives her justification for turning her back on God’s will.
Of course her attitude and behavior opposes the commitment she made at salvation. When a person receives salvation, he or she commits their life to Jesus Christ, making Him their Lord and Savior. Plain and simple, if we want to be honest through Jesus Christ, then we must live God’s purpose for our lives. We find that purpose in God’s Word, so to avoid the Bible is to avoid God. We are obligated to center our lives upon God and His Word.

Receiving Salvation Is Making A Verbal and Spiritual Commitment To God
If You’re A Christian, You Made The Following Commitment:
Romans 10: 8-10 (ASV)
8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach:
9 because if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved:
10 for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
We are saved or receive our salvation by faith (Romans 10:8). According to Romans 10:9 we must confess with our mouth Jesus Christ as Lord (of our lives) and believe it in our hearts (by faith). Romans 10:12-13 states that when we follow verses 8-10 we automatically receive our salvation because God does not discriminate. “He receives all that call upon Him.”
12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek: for the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich unto all that call upon him: 13 for, Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
By following the steps above, we become a part of the family of God by accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. However, many Christians aren’t taught to move beyond the spiritual and verbal commitment they made. They are like my relative. Maybe they aren’t as honest about turning their back on God’s will, but they do it just the same by not keeping their Word to God. We all do it or have done it! Is this how you want to live the rest of your life? Or would you like to honor your Words with actions following?
I hope that you desire to shift from your will to God’s will for your life. We are held accountable for our obedience to God’s Word and for living the individual purpose we’ve each been given. To help make this lesson more clear, I’ve added scripture that helped me better understand that I was responsible to obey God through His Word and through His will for my life.
I was a late-bloomer with God considering that I was nine years old when I was saved. It wasn’t until my mid-twenties that I began to study the Bible, but it took awhile to learn how to apply it to my life because my church didn’t believe that most of the Bible was relevant for us today. So I had to search my area for a church that believed that the Word of God never changes.
Hebrews 13:8 – Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
The Word Became Flesh
John 1-18 (ESV)
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

The first chapter of St. John makes it clear that God and the Word are the same and that Jesus was the Word that became flesh. So if we are born into salvation through Jesus Christ as our Lord, then we must follow the Word, because God and Jesus are the Word in spirit. As we put the Word of God or scripture into our hearts and act upon it those Words become life, changing our behaviors to those of the Word for a successful lifestyle. This is how we follow Christ and walk with Him. But that’s not enough…
Live God’s Purpose For Your Life To Bring Unity and Diversity In The Body
Proverbs 19:21 (AMP) Many plans are in a man’s mind, but it is the Lord’s purpose for him that will stand.
God has a specific purpose for each Christian. The body of Christ is made up of many members who have all been given a specific purpose. No one part is more important than another. All that is important is that each member fulfill the work they were given to accomplish.
1 Corinthians 12 (NIV) 12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body: whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.
As we fulfill the individual work or purpose God has given us, we all work within the same spirit. The body of Christ is one body with many members, all working together in obedience to God for the sake of spreading the Gospel. As we are obedient to our place in the Body, our lives will prosper as a result in our health, success, work, business, family, relationships, and financial growth. God will guide you into His will by means of a process. It doesn’t happen over night so you must seek His will for the rest of your life and learn how to hear God guiding you. Quick Guide To Live God’s Purpose
Practice the following actions to learn how to center upon God and put Him first in your life. As you learn how to trust God you will be able to follow His will (the Word) and specific guidance for you by the Holy Spirit.

It’s difficult for some people to live God’s will because they’re independent and find it difficult to trust others. However, if you desire a relationship with God, you need to look to God’s will over your own. You’ll soon see how God will put your life in balance for great success and rewards.
