Your service to God is of utmost importance, but if you don’t understand what you’re supposed to do, then it will be difficult to be committed. This lesson will help you understand what God expects from all who are Christians and how to take the scriptures by faith.

If you’ve read my lessons about God’s will and what it is, especially The Three Phases Of God’s Will, then you understand the process of salvation, making God’s Word come alive in your life and living God’s Purpose for your life.

Serving God is what you committed yourself to when you became saved.  Therefore, you cannot keep your Christianity hidden or to yourself. God’s Word for salvation must be spread, even if you were not called to serve God through missions or through the Office of The Evangelist. Christians also have a duty to help one another by teaching, guiding and counseling based upon the Word of God where opportunities arise.

If you’re afraid to take the initiative to serve God and to let God guide you into service, then you are not fulfilling a large part of your salvation. It’s not enough to read the Bible and go to church every Sunday. There is more to Christianity than keeping it for Sunday alone and just “being a good person.”

Many people believe that just “being a good person” is how one gets into heaven.  But this is not true.  We must always follow what God says. We are told in Romans 10: 8- 10 that we must confess that Jesus Christ is our savior and Lord and we must also believe it in our hearts. Making an empty statement is not enough.  So if we are not saved unless we follow what God tells us to do specifically for salvation.

Ezra 6:18 (NIV)

And they installed the priests in their divisions and the Levites in their groups for the service of God at Jerusalem, according to what is written in the Book of Moses.

The same goes for anything else we are told to do in the Bible.  If we decide to do the things of God differently than what God tells us to do in the Bible, then we are not fulfilling God’s will for that issue, principle or behavior.  This means that we cannot expect success or even the outcome of what we wanted to do or accomplish in our service to God or even our actions of living His will daily.  This is why many Christians are always in some kind of mess.  They are living life according to their will and not their own.

The key to success in our lives is to respect God’s will in every situation. It’s that simple in truth, but all Christians have some areas of difficulty for turning over their will to God’s.  So we are always in the process of change that will continually enhance our lives with greater success and fulfillment.

Forgiveness Leads To God’s Service By Cleansing Your Soul

I’d like to preface this lesson with the following message.  I wrote it for the sole purpose of educating you about your service to God and how to begin.  It is by no means given to frighten you, make you feel guilty if you are not currently serving God in any capacity or overwhelm you with the idea that you must turn your life upside down to make the changes needed to serve God.

Whatever you haven’t done for God is in the past and is no longer relevant to God once you ask Him to forgive you.  Ask God for forgiveness if you do feel guilty in Jesus’ Name and then receive it.  God blots out our sins as if they never were.

Isaiah 43:25 (NIV)

“I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.”

It’s exciting to know that God will never look at your sin again once you ask for forgiveness for anything.  People of the world may not forgive, but God will forgive and forget.  Most people, including Christians, say that they will forgive but not forget.  But this is not God’s way.  When we emulate His way of forgiving for others, which is His will, then we will better understand how He can not see our sins any longer.  This is God’s Word and, therefore, His will.

However, we can forgive some people and forget what they did to us, but because they have bad intentions, we must either separate ourselves from them or not trust them based upon their character.  The forgiveness keeps us from feeling guilty, bitter, angry vengeful and other emotions that will keep us from fulfilling God’s Will.  Now look at Mark 11:24-25.

MARK 11:24-28 (NIV)

“24. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.  25. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”

We see that God will answer our prayers, but if we don’t forgive God’s way we will not receive answered prayer because God cannot forgive us.  It is implied here that God doesn’t answer the prayers of those who do not forgive others.  So even if you can’t forgive yourself you must do it if you want God to forgive you and answer your prayers and honor your service. We can see how important it is to cleanse our souls of any unforgiveness by forgiving God’s way instead of forgiving some people and not others.

Living Your Service To God Through Salvation:

If you don’t have a desire to serve God then you have little understanding of what your salvation is all about.  Or you may not be saved.  Visit my Assurance of Salvation page before continuing with this lesson.  It will give you a complete understanding of salvation and what it means.

Once you understand salvation, you’ll be ready to work with God on behalf of His Kingdom through a two-fold means of service to God.

How You Should Give Your Service To God:

Romans 12:3 (NIV)

Humble Service in the Body of Christ ] For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.

When we serve God we are not to look at what we do in the competitive way the world judges people.  This concept doesn’t exist with God.  When we serve Him, He is looks at our hearts, not who is better than another person.  Churches are filled with people trying to outdo another in their service, to have the loudest voice, to take control, etc.  This is not what God is looking for in a person.  He is looking for a servant.

Can you be a servant to God?

God needs people who are willing to obey His Word and keep it.  People who are looking up to Him for their very existence, by trusting Him with their lives, their needs, them families, money , health and everything they need to exist.  He need people who are will to take the time to learn about Him by reading His Word and using it to “grow up Spiritually.”

Your service to God is not a means of showing the world how great you are, but how wonderful and magnificent our Heavenly Father is.  He should always be at the center of our service.  If He isn’t, then the services we perform are for ourselves and others to admire us.

Do you see the difference?

God must always get the glory in all that we do.  If you’re a person who needs others to praise and look up to you.  Then turn that need over to God and begin praising God and telling Him that He is number one in your life and you are His servant, willing to obey Him.  By doing this, you will discover the real you and be free of worrying that you’re never good enough.  You will gain a tremendous confidence and love for God at the same time.

Your Service To God By Living His Word

Now, where does the two-fold service come into play?  What does this mean concerning your life specifically?

The first way that we serve God is by living the Word or Bible personally, which will show outwardly to the world.  Daily, in some capacity we need to take time from our busy schedules and study the Word.  As we learn it, we practice it to let it overcome the parts of our characters that are keeping us from living up to God’s way so that we can experience success.  2 Timothy 2:18 tells us to study the Word so that we can understand it and make it a working  part of our lives.

2 Timothy 2:18 (KJV)

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

So living God’s will is obeying what God is telling us to do in the Bible as we learn it and continue to grow in Christ.  There is no landing point where we have arrived and can then cease our study and growth.  It is an on-going process.  And with the right attitude, it is exciting.

In all things that we do, we need to study in order to get better at whatever it is.  As we learn more and keep doing what it is we have to do for success in, we will become proficient.  Applying this to studying God’s Word, we will become mature Christians as we continue to be diligent at applying what we learn. When it comes to what we should study, we should concentrate on those areas in life that are separating us from God.

Once you begin your study, the exciting thing is that it’s not how much you know, it’s how much you have learned and acted upon that will make a difference in your walk with God.  Many Christians say that they have read the Bible a number of times, but their lives show that they know very little about what they read.  What is important to God is that you are sincere about centering upon Him by reflecting the Word that you know.

Of course as a Christian your service to God can begin just by using common sense.  We all have a good idea of right and wrong.  By automatically changing those things in our lives that are keeping us from giving our lives to God we are serving Him.

We don’t steal in any form, even small.  We don’t cheat people, lie or neglect our children.  As you read the Bible you will refine these areas, but if there is anything you know is wrong, stop doing it today by the authority of Jesus Christ. Using His name will empower you to overcome the actions in your life that are bringing you down and keeping your from living successfully in Christ Jesus.

This is one of the ways to serve God and keep Him at the center of your life.  This part of your service extends to the people around you which includes friends, family and co-workers/people you meet.  As you reflect God’s Word to others, you are being a disciple for Christ.  Through regular prayer you will become a powerhouse for sharing Christ with others as you are led.  You wouldn’t want to take time out from your employment to evangelize, but God will lead you to those who are ready to receive or need to hear the Word and you will be ready to service God by sharing.

By acting upon God’s Word and remaining close to God in prayer, you will be led to a specialty where you have a keen ability of sharing God’s Word.  It may be within your church in the Ministry of Helps (serving in your church), it could be by holding teaching classes in your home, on the Internet, or volunteering in your community by visiting hospitals and praying with those who are sick.  If you are very busy or have small children you can pray for others, your country, and specific people. There is something special you can do and God will show you what it is for where you are in your life at this moment.

Your Service To God By Fulfilling Your Purpose

Everyone is called to a special purpose by God.  Whether we live that purpose or not is up to each of us.  For more information about living your purpose in Christ, go to “Your Life Purpose.”

There are four reasons why Christians are not fulfilling their “life purpose” within the body of Christ:

1. They are not knowledgeable that God has a special calling for them

2. They are afraid to fulfill their calling because they want to keep control of their lives

3. They don’t know how to fulfill their calling

4.  They don’t care nor do they want to go through any trouble to discover what God desires for their life

Of course, if you were called into the ministry, your personal service to God will be whatever you are called to do since you are already in the  ministry.

But for Christians in the secular world, we need to discover what God would have us do to earn a living.  For those who don’t need to earn an income, they must learn from God what kind of service they excel at if they’re not sure or don’t know. God has a special plan for you! As you look to Him you will learn what it is.

God has given each of us special talents and abilities to accomplish His will and as we use them, we will realize success.  We may be called to business, working for an employer, volunteering (if an income is not needed), ministry or anything. Whatever it is, it will fall into four categories. And as you seek God through the prayers of dedication and consecration you will learn what your special calling is.
