Part 1 left off with Step No. 1: “Find and Join a Local, Spirit-filled, Word Church.”

Your Faith Walk With God Maintenance Plan

Step No. 2. Start a daily devotional time. Do it alone and with your family to share God’s Word with them. However, you need to spend time alone with God. I was able to better focus upon healing whenever I have spent time alone with God because I could talk to Him and ask questions. Many times I received the answers, encouragement or whatever it is you need.

It’s so important that you be armed with prayer on a daily basis.

Ephesians 6:18, “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.”

You must learn to begin your day with a time of prayer, meditative thought and scripture reading to maintain your faith walk with God. This helps to awaken the spirit and set straight the day’s path. It does not have to be a long, ritualistic procedure with the thought of pleasing God by doing this. Consistency is the key, not trying to be good enough to please God. Remember, you are good enough through Jesus Christ to please God, not of yourself. Remain aware that you are keeping yourself in tune with the Holy Spirit.
Here’s how to break up this special time:

  • time for prayer concerning the matters of the day
  • time for scripture reading
  • time for meditative thought

This can all be done in five minutes to twenty minutes or so. The results will last an entire day and night. In the different periods of my life I’ve changed how I prioritize. As a young mother, I worked around my children’s day, using their nap time and later their time at school for “my time with God.” This was when I was in good health or needed healing. Now that my children are grown, it’s easier to prioritize. The consistency is important to maintain your faith walk with God.

If you work outside your home, you can prioritize your time to work this time with God into your schedule.

If you’re ill, it would be wise to repeat this procedure at mid-day and especially before you go to sleep. This was and still is my best time for meditating in the Word and spending time with God.

Daniel 6:10, “Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.”

If you’re really pressed for time in the mornings before going to work, use the time you spend showering, washing your hair and brushing your teeth to meditate upon the Word, asking God to bless your day, give you wisdom, bless your family and heal your body. Then use your lunch hour at work to read and pray from your car (if it’s allowed and safe). I’ve done this at a time when I worked outside our home.

You must daily feed your spirit as you do your body with food. The spirit is the candle of the Lord.

Proverbs 20:27, “The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly,” and when you learn to keep it, it will pervade all dimensions of living with it’s powerful, positive influence.

A devotional time should also be conducted collectively with brothers and sisters in the Body of Christ. We can also have devotional time within our churches at evening church on Sunday evenings or perhaps a Wednesday Bible study or morning prayer group.

Acts 1:14, “These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.” When it is practiced with our friends in the church, it will fill many needs that are otherwise filled with an overdose of secular activity.

Does it sound like too much time spent to maintain your faith walk with God? What has spending little or no time with God done for you? Go to Part III.
