In Philippians 3:13, Paul says, “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead.”
The statement, “One thing I do” echoes of words King David spoke when he said, “One thing I desire,” and the words Jesus spoke to the rich young ruler, “There is one thing you lack.”
Then there is the blind man, who had been blind from birth, whom Jesus healed. When he was questioned, he said, “There is one thing I know: I was blind, now I see.” One thing I do; one thing I desire; one thing you lack; one thing I know.
Each of these statements points to a vital thing needed if you are to grow in your spiritual life: FOCUS. And when it comes to Christians, we need to have Christian Focus or Godly focus. We need to center upon what the Bible says.
The problem with many people is they are far too scattered. They are trying to do everything and be everything. They try to be a jack-of-all-trades and end up being a master of none.
If that describes you today, let me ask you a question: What is the one main thing that should be the focus of your life?
Before I retired, I helped Christians get known on the Internet. I also helped Christian authors promote their books. But there were some people who wouldn’t stay with one project long enough to succeed.
I found it difficult and most of the time impossible to work with people who refused to focus on what they did best and inwardly desired to do. Some quit in defeat from trying one project after another because they never remained focused long enough on one project to make anything work.
When people can’t focus, they drop their latest idea and move on to the next not realizing that they may have been close to the success they are seeking. It’s sad because this type of person tries so many things and does so many things that they’re not very effective at anything! The reason is because they lack focus and the faith in God to to remain stabilized in what they’re doing for success.
Look what James has to say about having a Christian focus (hover over the verse). James 1:5-8
How To Have Christian Focus
Let’s take this character trait a little farther by my asking you a question. Do you have a lack of focus when it comes to the things of God and for living God’s will for your life? If you died and stood before God today, what is the one thing He is going to ask you about? It’s going to be concerning what you have done that He has asked of you according to 2 Corinthians 5:10 which tells us that we will be judged for those things which we had done while on earth.
Remember what Paul said, “One thing I do.” What is that one thing for you? Will it be to live God’s will and let Him guide you? Please take time to ponder this question today and then wait upon God to learn if you need more focus. He is waiting to take you by the hand and lead you into the most fulfilling life imaginable–no matter who you are and what your age. God has something for everyone to do!
Put your focus upon God and I can assure you that you will come to have focus on the things of life that will bring you success, peace and great fulfillment.
