Psalm 37:23-24 states,

The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the LORD upholds him with His hand.

Study God's WordLooking at the first sentence of the verses above you see the steps that God has ordered for a good man. This is someone, man or woman, who is following God. We begin to follow God by studying the Word (the Bible) and act upon it. We have to get pro-active with God in order to follow after Him and learn His ways.

It’s not good enough to become a Christian, go to church an hour or two on Sundays and leave it at that. Christianity is a 24/7 commitment.

We’re expected to grow past the baby stage with God and become fully matured Christians in order to follow Christ and live God’s purpose for our lives. A baby can’t keep up with an adult let alone our Heavenly Father who expects us to follow Him by following Christ. The way we do that is to study God’s Word.

When Christ was on earth He lived to be thirty-three so He grew to be an adult man. We also know that He grew up spiritually as He taught in the synagogues and in gatherings, amazing the people with God’s wisdom. We’re expected to learn that same information and utilize it in our lives so that we can grow up spiritually and become like Christ. We must follow Him in mind, body and spirit. We will never be perfect as Christ is, but we will be perfected in Him.

God cannot use us or lead us into our special purpose if we remain a baby in Christ rather than a man or women who is strong in faith and strong in the Word, able to help God save the lost from a dying world to salvation in Christ. We need to study God’s Word to show ourselves approved.

John 5:39 (AMP) 39 You search and investigate and pore over the Scriptures diligently, because you suppose and trust that you have eternal life through them. And these [very Scriptures] testify about Me!

Christ is revealed in the scriptures, so as we follow what the Bible says, we will be following Him.

It’s also important to look at the second sentence of my opening scripture, Psalm 37:23-24 : Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the LORD upholds him with His hand.

As you choose to follow God in the work He has given you to accomplish you can still mess up. God affirms that you may be seeking to walk with Him, but you can still mess up because there is that human factor.

Our flesh gets in the way. Sometimes we make wrong decisions. Sometimes we can be a bit stubborn. And sometimes we blow it, even when that is the last thing we want to do! So as you study the Word, and draw closer to God you’ll know that He won’t abandon you if you stumble. He will support you, and He will lift you up with His hand.

The Bible says in the book of Deuteronomy that God is our refuge and our strength and that underneath us are His everlasting arms. That should bring you much comfort in your walk with God. By growing in the Word and becoming spiritually strong you will learn that even when you make mistakes you’ll be able to continue on with God in forgiveness rather than giving up and walking away from Christ.

You and I may stumble, you and I may fall, but we are not going to stay down, because God’s arms and His hands are underneath us, and they will uphold us. So study God’s Word and know that God will always move you forward, even when you take a step backward for a time.
